On May 7, 1999, the International House of Prayer Missions Base was founded by Mike Bickle and twenty full-time “intercessory missionaries” who cried out to God in prayer with worship for thirteen hours each day. On September 19, 2009, while celebrating our ten-year anniversary together, we made a sober commitment before God to combine 24/7 prayers for justice with 24/7 works of justice until the Lord returns. Outreach has always been a vital part of our mission. However, at that time, we set our heart to significantly increase our outreach and ministry. Thus, we are launching new outreach ministries that will continue 24/7 alongside our 24/7 prayer and worship.

Jeremy Riddle is a songwriter and worship leader. He first hit the scene in 2007 with the critically acclaimed record, Full Attention. This project had the radio hit Sweetly Broken, which was the number one song on the radio station K-Love for over 40 weeks in 2007. Other singles from that record were Stand in Awe and God of All Glory. Since then Jeremy has toured extensively all over the US. The Riddle Band has opened for Rebecca St. James, Big Daddy Weave and has played events with Brenton Brown as well.

Jeremy comes from a family of 7 children and was homeschooled all the way through high school. He graduated from Cal state Fullerton with a BA in political science. Jeremy attended and later served as a youth pastor at the Anaheim Vineyard. Riddle is married with 4 children and now lives in Redding California and is part of the worship ministry at Bethel Church.

Raised on a farm in the small town of Quincy, Washington, Holly Starr is not afraid of hard work. In fact, the farm girl in Starr much prefers the dirt and grime to the glamour of the spotlight. That’s why she’s still confounded as to how she arrived at this place in life, releasing her second full-length record, Tapestry; working with one of the industry’s most sought-after producers, this year’s Dove Award-winning producer Rusty Varenkamp (Tenth Avenue North, Meredith Andrews); and performing on countless stages across the country, including Creation Festival, Lifest and an opening spot for LeAnn Rimes. It’s all Starr can do not to pinch herself.
Named after her grandmother, Starr definitely lives up to her name. Though being a “star” is the furthest thing from her mind. “Grace is so real in my life, and I can’t even express that in words,” the 19-year-old says. “I have felt so inadequate and unprepared for every single thing that has happened from day 1. I live in Quincy, first of all; and there’s no one in the music business there… How in the world did this happen?”
It began when a producer in Seattle took notice of Starr’s talent after discovering her songs on MySpace. At the time, Starr was writing songs for her youth group’s band, which made their way online. Producer Brandon Bee (Stacie Orrico, Lanae Hale) took Starr under his wing and helped her record her first full-length project, Embraced, in 2008.
For Tapestry, Starr was introduced to Varenkamp through a friend of a friend, and an immediate connection was made. “I just instantly fell in love with [Rusty],” says Starr. “God’s peace just entered that room. I walked away thinking, OK, if all my questions and worries and fears about everything that I’m supposed to do next were just solved, that’s the God we serve. That was way too easy, way too powerful.”
The feeling is mutual. Starr’s project was one Varenkamp eagerly took on. “Holly’s music and artistry definitely stem from who she is inside. She’s passionate about connecting with the heart of the listener, which makes the production easier,” says Varenkamp. “On this record, we’ve tried to balance her conviction for truth with music that is relevant to her audience.”
Tapestry is the result of the dynamic collaboration between the two. The title stems from the place where most of us live our lives, somewhere between honoring God and giving in to life’s disruptions, the places where God is weaving His story. “It’s an interesting thought because our relationship with God is often described as ‘vertical,’” Starr says in reference to the album’s title. “And ‘horizontal’ [refers to] the life that happens around us that we tend to get distracted by sometimes.”
With Tapestry, more than ever before, Starr is wearing her heart on her sleeve. “In the last two years, God has done a huge work in my heart and my life, just simplifying how I think of Him,” Starr explains.
“I came to this point where I was starting to realize God is using me in the music ministry, and it started really freaking me out! [I asked], ‘God, do You really want to use me in this way? You’re using my gifts, and it’s amazing. I’ll sings songs, but I cannot get on stage if I don’t believe from the top of my head to the bottom of my toes that You are real in my life.’” It was after this conversation with God that the melodies for Tapestry began.
Authenticity is what listeners will discover on the new album. Songs like “Undertow” do not always end in resolve as Starr confidently details struggle and addiction with a plea for God to pull us out of the undertow; while “Holding On To You” is a song about clinging to the promise of God’s faithfulness.
“There are two sides to the record, musically speaking,” says Starr. “There are these upbeat, more pop-driven songs, and then there are these really broken down, more acoustic songs. There’s a paradox in the record which I really love.” Paradox can be found in the lyrics of stand-out track “Take Me As I Am”: I’m supposed to be in love with You/Why do I fail You all the time?/I’m supposed to be in love with You, but I’m afraid that it’s a lie.
“This song wraps up the entire last two years of my life,” she says. “He just takes us the way we are, sets us completely free and purifies us. That’s grace.”
While wrestling with the profound contradictions of life and the complexities of grace, Starr has come to realize that her fans connect best when she’s at her most vulnerable.
“With this new record, I feel like God has been reminding me to just be real. It’s been a journey of Him saying, ‘Be real, Holly! This is really who you are, the story I’ve given you; don’t try to avoid the most truthful lyric or be something you’re not. ‘Cause yes, sometimes you are angry with Me; and yes, you fall deeply in love with Me. Yes, I am here; and yes, you feel like I’m not here,’” she continues. “That’s life. People relate to that.”
Starr explores these deep-rooted theological contrasts in a way that’s both musically compelling and lyrically insightful, creating a piece of artwork that truly reflects who she is. “God Himself is a paradox to us,” says Starr, “so I believe that’s where the theme of this record comes from.”
Not only is the theme of paradox obvious on Tapestry, but listeners will immediately catch Starr’s insatiable zeal for people. “I have a passion for people. People. Everyone. All ages,” says Starr. “I feel like when I put them in a box, then that’s when I am least successful in my ministry.”
She’s often reminded of the artists who have profoundly influenced her, a list including everyone from Superchick and Skillet to Nicole C. Mullen, Chris Tomlin and Mary Mary. She aspires to be that for other girls. As for her greatest influence, Starr says her older brother has had the most impact on her life. His shining example has been a steadfast beacon for Starr’s faith as she’s pursued her musical calling. “He’s Jesus in my life in so many ways,” she says. “He’s taught me more than any one person in this world how God uses the weak to shame the wise.”
Starr also continues to be inspired by her work with Compassion International. She’s a Compassion advocate; a choice she said she prayerfully made after meeting children sponsored by Compassion on a mission trip to El Salvador.
Her recent trip to Israel is also an inspiration stewing in the back of her mind that will likely translate into future songwriting endeavors. While leading worship in Israel, Starr met members of her grandmother’s family, whom she had never met and her grandmother hadn’t seen in over 60 years. She was able to reconnect the family members with her grandmother via Skype for a surprise reunion.
During the trip she also found out that she is Jewish by bloodline, another strange paradox in the life of this singer still grappling with the ironic contrasts of life. “I’m still processing [Israel]…chewing on it…the land, the history, the people. Since God is outside of time, and He chose the Jews, how does that affect us now? There’s got to be more He wants us to learn from their life than just the Old Testament stories.”
While Starr continues to have aspirations as far as her career is concerned, she’s counting on continued grace to lead the way as she allows real life to be her muse. While she acknowledges that she doesn’t always measure up to her own expectations, she also recognizes that she’s not in control to begin with. “[God says], ‘Submit to me, and I’ll fill in the gaps. Just submit, and I’ll complete it. Just be willing, and I’ll be there.’ That’s what grace is.”

Molly Williams is a vocalist and worship leader who has been involved with MorningStar Ministries in Charlotte, North Carolina for the past 8 years. Molly writes passionate songs that bring hope and encouragement to the body of Christ. Her first EP, Sacrifice, brings the church into a new level of intimacy and intense worship. She is a graduate of the MorningStar School of Ministry and was on staff with Morningstar for 3 years. Molly now travels worldwide teaching and leading at worship conferences and worship schools. She also currently tours as background singer for renowned American recording artist, Wynnona Judd, as well as worship leaders such as Don Potter, Jonathan Helser, and Suzy Wills Yaraei.
A vocal performance major in college, Molly grew up singing in and out of church, listening to a wide variety of musical styles, from soul music and seventies rock to the classical styles she sang in school. After college, Williams began singing backup for established artists and worship leaders. However, as she began to develop her own voice, Molly was drawn to the sounds of British bands like U2 and Coldplay and American roots style artists like Over the Rhine, Bonnie Raitt, and Counting Crows.
Molly's musical influences have blended into her very own distinct style of worship, a kind of "British rock with American soul". Her recent EP, Sacrifice, highlights this sound. From the very up-tempo arena rock worship of "Jesus Loves Me" to the moody crescendos of "Enough", this brand of praise is both unique and genuine, as Williams comments herself, "The songs I write aren’t typical worship songs, in their style or content…I tend to write songs that deal with things that a lot of us go through while we’re trying to follow the Lord…laying our lives down, getting free, wanting more of Him and less of ourselves, learning to love people."
In the end, though, Molly's main objective in her music and her life is to see people, especially young people, connect with God: "My heart is to create an environment where people can just be free to express their love to the Lord…I want young people to know that really giving their lives to the Lord is the most rocking life they can live." .

About the New Album:

My new CD “Take Me Down to the River” is finally out and I’m so excited to get to share it with you! I wrote (or co-wrote) the songs over the past several years and they show a glimpse of my walk with the Lord and what He’s been doing in my life. My musical journey has taken me back to my roots in “southern” music…country, soul, and rock & roll are part of my musical heritage and you will hear traces of all that in this album. I had unbelievable help from some of my extremely gifted friends… Don Potter, Ricky Skaggs, James Duke, Al Sergel, Paulette Wooten and Shae Wooten comprised the band….talk about TALENT! You’ll also hear the beautiful voices of some of my favorite singers, Sarah McMillan, Molly Skaggs, Kim Hill, Andrew Williams, David Vallier, & Elizabeth Walker. My friend Joel Khouri produced the album, and he did an amazing job at capturing my heart in the music and the Americana sound I wanted for this project. I hope it encourages you and fills you with hope, and that you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed the process of making it.

In the summer of 1999, the youth group led by Banning Liebscher at Bethel Church in Redding, California, launched the first Jesus Culture conference. The heart of these gatherings was to serve other churches and lead young people to experience the radical love of God. At each conference there was a strong presence of the Lord, and the youth and young adults were going back to their homes, schools, work places and churches, completely impassioned and transformed.

A few years into hosting conferences at Redding, the Lord began to speak to us about a new breed of revivalists that were emerging throughout the earth to answer the cry of God’s yearning for nations. Our mandate was defined: to raise up, mobilize, equip, encourage, resource, and send these burning ones to fulfill the call of God on their lives, and see entire cities saved, campuses revolutionized, and nations discipled. The Lord revealed they would be marked by four main characteristics:
1) They would be connected with spiritual fathers and mothers and aligned under their covering.
2) They would be passionately in love with Jesus – encountering His extravagant love for them daily.
3) They would give their lives to prayer and know how to win the war in the heavens.
4) They would walk in the supernatural – demonstrating the Kingdom of God through power.

It soon became very clear to us that worship was to be a significant part of our movement. Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala, and Melissa How were worship leaders at our local youth group, and the Lord began to use them to bring an entire generation into whole-hearted worship.Shortly after God commissioned us to mobilize this new breed of revivalists, we began taking Jesus Culture conferences to different regions, and currently hold them in Redding, Orange County, Dallas/Ft Worth, Chicago, Atlanta, and multiple cities through Australia and England. Also, in response to our mandate, Jesus Culture Music and Campus Awakening have been inspired and birthed out of Jesus Culture.

Jesus Culture Music exists to ignite revival in the nations of the earth. Our heart is to compel the Body of Christ to radically abandon itself to a lifestyle of worship, motivated by a passion to see God receive the glory that is due His name. Hey all, hope this blog finds you well, and I hope you have been enjoying these summer months. It can be a wholesome time can’t it? Camping, smores, fairs, berries, baseball, BBQ’s, swimming. I really love the season myself. San Diego summers are some of the best in my opinion. I have fond memories of being in the high school youth group in the summer time. We would pile into the old church vans that were designated for us “youths”. You know the ones. Stains all over the place, foam and metal sticking out of the seats, the same old DC talk cassette playing because the eject button hadn’t worked since the 90′s. We would make the 10 minute drive to the beach, start up a roaring bonfire and sing worship songs till the stars came out. (sigh)

This summer has been a fairly busy one for me and the rest of the crew. I’m officially naming this summer the “Summer of Conferences”. It seems as though we’ve been a part of one for every demographic. Conferences for college students, for high school students, for middle school student. Conferences for pastors, for worship leaders, for men and for women. From Desperation in Colorado Springs, to Joyce Meyer in St. Paul Minnesota, we’ve been to quite a few. And you know what? I’ve been enjoying them. There’s something kind of cool about pin pointing a large group of people that all have something in common, because you can point them to Jesus a very specific way that’s relevant to them.

I’ve also been doing something else I’m very excited about this summer. I’ve been recording a Christmas Record! I know! So fun! It’s got 10 tracks with 2 original songs, 7 well known songs, and a little instrumental fun one. It’s almost done, so it looks as though it should be available late this fall. I think it’s just going to be called “Songs For Christmas” unless a better name comes to mind… Maybe you can help? Can’t wait to share it with y’all. My biggest goal was to create something classic enough for people to play in their houses while they’re decorating their tree, yet unique enough to stand out from the thousands of other Christmas records out there. Don’t know if we hit the mark, but we did our best. There will be more on that in the future.

During 2005-2006, Key of David Ministries made efforts to record every event that Jason Upton and his team was scheduled to do. Psalm 91:11 “For he will give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” From before the time Israel chose a human king (the days of Cloud by Day and fire by night) to the rise and fall of Nebuchadnezzar …….from the rejection of Jesus and the inconvenience ‘The God-child’ created for so many in his day to the inconvenience children seem to now create in American society, God has always been sending angels to help “keep us in all his ways.”

How extreme should we be about trusting our lives to “messengers” (these angels) that might inconvenience us, or even hurt us? In one of the Gospel accounts of the betrayal of Jesus, Peter cuts off the soldier’s ear. Jesus then heals the man and says, “Peter, this cup my Father has for me, do you think I should not drink it?” Jesus was saying: ‘Don’t be afraid, Peter! We are not alone! This is no random act of betrayal. This is my Father’s will concerning my purpose for living.’ You see Jesus was so submitted to his Father that his gut reaction to betrayal was not to fight it but to receive it. Amazing! That is not my gut reaction to betrayal. And I believe that is why God has been giving me these songs and revelations……because He wants it to be my gut reaction. He wants me to see God as so sovereign that He “works the angels” to fulfill his purposes for me, whether that be changing me or moving me or even betraying me. Jesus did not see life as a competition (something to be fought for) but as a cup (something to be received). He had “made” the Father his refuge.

When we do not make the Lord our refuge but place our protection in the hands of false-comforts (i.e. self, home, friends, economy, national leaders, or even religion) humanity has a biblically recorded history of acting out of fear, thus killing its enemies. ‘Self-rule’ led the Catholic church to attempt to kill Luther, Luther then tried to kill Zwinglie, Zwinglie tried to kill Calvin, and Calvin tried to kill Huss. And it continues with us: fighting for our land and our rights and our control, killing our enemies, aborting our children and divorcing the spouses who inconvenience our lives. And why? Simply because we innately know that we are not in control of our destiny and yet are not willing to submit to God. So we attempt to control anything we can.

As one of my friends said recently concerning the American church: ‘if we had all the money in the world we would buy anything but a miracle, but only because we cannot buy a miracle.’ Knowing this, we would rather buy everything we can and control it, than give up all our rights and submit ourselves to God’s rule thereby gaining the miracle of the Kingdom in this life and the life to come. I speak here of the church not because we are worse than the world but because we should know better. We must begin to be an example on earth of the Kingdom. When Jesus walked the streets and hillsides and wanted to show us an example of a ‘creation’ living in trust and submitted to the Kingdom of his Father, He did not point to a middle aged man fulfilling his dream, He did not point to religious leaders gaining crowd approval, and He did not point to kings and rulers. Rather, He pointed to children, lilies, trees, and birds. Trusting the Angels is all about learning to trust God’s sovereign rule over our lives to the extent that every child, spouse, friend, and yes, even enemy can be seen as a cup to drink in from our Father. He has truly given ‘his “Angels” charge over us, to keep us in all his ways.’

"Christians often pray for an ‘open heaven’. In connection with our ministry earlier this year in the US and in Holland, Jason sensed the Lord saying that the prayer that’s needed today isn’t “open up the heavens”…....but rather, “open up the earth”. (God has always been available to us; it is we who have not been open to Him.) All of us at Key of David felt strongly that significant portions of these “live” ministry times ought to be made available to the public…….and, in fact, that God had already given us the title: “Open Up the Earth”. Little did any of us realize that in the ensuing months we would learn very personally what that title was all about.

We began enlisting help, traveling to Nashville and spending money in an effort to correct the obvious mistakes and begin the laborious mixing process. But as the weeks and months wore on there was a discontent amongst us with the results of that work. As we removed the mistakes and seemingly enhanced the recordings via mixing……the anointing seemed to be ebbing away. Eventually we concluded that we preferred the raw, off-the-board recordings much more so than the edited, mixed versions.

Then the Lord brought home the lesson. In the beginning when God first ‘opened up the earth’, it was raw: no trimmed trees, no dammed rivers, no tunnels and no levies. It was just creation in the rough……man had no hand in it……and it was beautiful! Without realizing it we had for months been working to ‘close up the earth’ when what God wanted was the raw, rough ‘creation’ that arose spontaneously during those ministry times.

Sometimes excellence results by correcting mistakes and doing what is needed to perfect the product. But that is not always the case! Striving for perfection……or making things relevant does not necessarily equate with excellence. At times what’s needed is to just trust in what was done originally and allow it to stand. That is what we have now done.

As such, “Open Up the Earth” is now a collection of 2 track, off- the-board, mixed-on-site audio recordings. Then we’ve added a DVD (a first ever for Jason), which mirrors much of Disc 1 from Harrisburg, PA. Disc 2 is from Holland with certain other material added. We are not referring to this as a conventional “live” project. Rather, “Open Up the Earth” is a series of Holy Spirit-led messages and prayers, put to song, as caught on tape during these times of worship. We trust you will enjoy and be blessed by them."

It’s a cold Midwestern winter and I’m sitting in the corner of a living room built in the mid 1800’s. The room is square with a low ceiling and is full of wood beams and wood floors from trees older than the greatest of my great grandparents.

To my right is a large, stone, wood-burning fireplace. To my left is a window with a view that reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting. The front yard is blanketed with a fresh snow yielding a stillness that only a fresh snow can yield.

With a cup of hot coffee in hand, you might think this is an ideal setting for reading or simply enjoying the snap, crackle and pop of the warm fire. And yet, it is much more, so much more.

Poised between the cold of winter and the warmth of the fire are my friends. With instruments ready and spirits attentive, we partake of a musical communion, a musical Eucharist.

We take, bless, break and give.

As words become our bread and music our wine, table fellowship is continuously a realized ritual. Each moment is fragile. It is so real and so ordinary – in fact – that without the assistance of the promised Helper, the moment will allow itself to be missed, reasoned away and shrugged off because there is not a lack of glory in our midst, but a lack of perception.

The words are broken and shared between us through dialogue. We hear the story of their inception and we do our best to enter into the initial act of worship with the prayer of capturing an authentic expression. Bread must be kneaded before it rises.

Instruments as our chalices, we pour our lives in like wine with the hope of creating space for these words, creating music for these words. Grapes must be pressed to make wine.

Laughing at our weaknesses and crying in adoration of His strength, an unspoken revelation blows through the living room reminding us that He is not like us and that His ways are not like ours.

As I look around the room and catch the eyes of my friends, my brothers…the time suspends just enough for Truth to invade my soul…

Our God need no lesser cathedral.
Our homes.
Our families.
Our friends.
Our neighbors.
Our lives.

This is a world where holy ground looks like hard wood floors; where the sun rises, and sets; where we eat three meals a day; we work hard; we play hard; we laugh and we suffer. This is a world where communion, the Eucharist, is a ritual…a beautiful ritual called life. Life where we are reminded in every moment that we have been given to each other by God, in Jesus the Son and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We have come to the mountain of the living God.
Right here.
Right now.

On the rim of the visible world we go…

Jason and Rachel Upton named this CD "Key of David" because God has anointed the prophetic worship led by them and there team with a "breaker anointing" (Judges 5:2 Hebrew "when the breakers break through in Israel" or "when those who loosen unbind in Israel"). But shortly we will see grasslands caught up in the biggest wildfire from heaven and the greatest harvest of the ages. God has given the Upton's and prophetic worship like that which they minister, a key place in spreading the fire of His Glory.

For years I had the impression that God's love for me was tied to my striving for success and running towards my dreams. I remember several months ago I read a quote by Mother Teresa, "Jesus has not called us to be successful, but to be faithful."

In Mark 3:13 Jesus calls to himself those that He wanted so that they might be with Him. This last year I've learned that in the Scriptures it's much rarer to be called a 'friend' of God than it is to be 'used' by God.

Jacob struggled most of his life to gain worth, ownership and recognition. He stole, he lied, and he wrestled all in a strife-filled attempt to be somebody. He never realized that in striving to be somebody he was actually neglecting the very person God created him to be, His friend. So God never blessed Jacob while he was striving, lying, competing, or cheating....but rather while he was sleeping. These songs were given for the purpose of calling a generation back to intimacy with their Father. In history there have been few things more terrible than people who try to fulfill the great commission without first having understood God's loving acceptance of them. As was the case with Jesus, before He healed a lame person, fed the thousand, or raised the dead, he first heard His Father's voice call out from heaven, "You are My beloved, and in You I am well pleased."

After our recording sessions in Nashville in August, one of our band members, William Clark, wrote the following about the experience:

The old man who made his living by carving beautiful and ornate designs into huge wooden doors was asked, "How do you know when it's finished?"
"When they come to take it away", he responded.

I fear you have come to take away "The Days at Darkhorse". Though if you were to leave it with me, I might never finish, because how do you fully describe an experience like that ? I could go on carving and touching and pondering forever, and never render a fitting description. Nevertheless . . . here it is.

"The Days at Darkhorse"
The days at Darkhorse are ones that I am sure we will never forget. Even though what you are about to hear is a collaboration of immense proportions, the experience of it was such a light yoke and an easy burden.

From the peaceful atmosphere so carefully cultivated by the studio owner, to the expertise of the engineers, to the wisdom of the producer, to the prayers of hundreds of intercessors, to the heart of the musicians and singers, to the precious words from the Father . . . all of this was so powerfully yet delicately orchestrated by the Holy Spirit into the worship experience captured on this recording.

Just as soon as we had gotten settled in, the Holy Spirit began to move so strongly through the place, and the intimacy we felt with Jesus moved us so deeply that all we could do was abandon ourselves and respond to Him in worship. Eighteen hours later, we had captured eighteen songs. (We had reserved the studio for four days, but wound up only using two.)

There were times when we were literally unable to play or sing, having been overcome with emotion. There were times when friends who had stopped by to pray, found themselves in an intimate embrace with the Father, weeping and worshiping Him along with us. And there were times when we sat in rapt wonder and just listened as the Lord of all creation responded through the thunder and the rain.

The days at Darkhorse were such a precious and overwhelming experience of Him. But it was just a small taste of what He longs for us all to know. Our deepest prayer is that by worshiping Him along with us, you truly come to know Him and how passionately He loves you and cares for you.

It's not good music that breaks the yoke; it is the anointing of Jesus that breaks the yoke and sets us free. All through the Bible God used people who didn't have a clue, who didn't have all the answers and who didn't really know anything. They had no strategy - or their only strategy appeared to be to look to heaven and say, 'my eyes are on You, great victorious warrior, You are my shinning star'. In the end, it's our own choice whether to live out our own strategies thereby living so that others see only 'our' abilities; but then we'll end up just like the enemy - just another "dying star". God is building an army of sons and daughters whose single-minded passion is for His purposes alone.

Stars rise and fall but sons don't. God has raised up a generation of sons and daughters, not a generation of superstars. But as long as we continue trying to be someone or something we will never be anything of worth to God. Jesus was worth everything to God. Jesus was the ultimate warrior, the ultimate pastor, the ultimate intercessor, the ultimate worshipper, and the ultimate teacher; and not because Jesus was the ultimate superstar, but because Jesus was the ultimate son. The songs on this cd call us from stardom into sonship.

Jason Upton – Remember (2003)

”Remember…….is one of the most frequently repeated commands in the Old Testament. Even God Himself, as revealed through the prophets, appears as much a reflective and contemplative Being as one Who focuses only on the future. That the God and Father of us all and the Creator of the universe would take time to ‘remember’ should give us some idea of the importance of such a discipline. For me, ‘remembering’ often makes me deal with the truth about how dependent I really am. I believe that this is particularly important in Western Civilization where such a high value is placed on independence. I think ‘remembering’ puts independence in its proper place. The truth is that we are not independent at all; and our forgetfulness of this truth epitomizes our sinful condition.

“Remember” is a compilation of two nights of ministry. The first night was recorded in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The tornado that devastated Oklahoma City was headed right for us the night we were scheduled to begin our ministry at a local church. At first the church leadership wanted to send everyone to a protected area. I suggested, ‘maybe we could sneak a little worship song in before we head to shelter’. They agreed and we began to sing the song, They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love. When we got into the middle of the song I was led to begin speaking directly to that tornado. I did not want to do this because I could not get past the thought of how stupid I would look speaking against this tornado and then, when the song was over, all of us having to run for our lives to shelter. I was afraid that my words……..might just be words…….absent the power of God to stop that tornado. But while thinking this very thought I found myself already speaking…….it was too late to stop. So it surprised me more than anyone else to later learn that, immediately as we started praying, the tornado system mysteriously broke apart. (How weak my faith is!) God literally stopped a tornado that night as we played and prayed. I hope I never forget it. Yes God can stop a natural tornado. But much more importantly, if we would ask, God will stop the spiritual tornadoes that divide us and render us such an anemic force on the earth. My prayer is that we will ‘come to the water’, the very love of the Father, and quickly shed the independence that so weakens us. Only then will we be able to take on the radical dependence of a child that was the strength of the early Christians.

The remainder of “Remember” was recorded eleven weeks later in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Great River Road is the beginning of that journey into childhood. This song is my own personal testimony……followed by a spontaneous time of leading the people through deliverance from rejection, anger, disillusionment, etc.

When You Were a Child, was inspired by Hosea 11 and by watching my own children. The second verse, “when you were a child the world was the unknown, but you were wise to simply trust in me, that I would never leave, and hold on tight”, reminds me of the joy our Father must have in the trusting ‘wisdom’ of a child. At the time I wrote this verse my little daughter, Emma, was holding onto my shirt so tightly that I could not set her down long enough to finish the song on my own……so she ‘finished’ it with me.

The combination of Trust, First Language and Lullaby is one free-flowing spontaneous song, childlike in its simplicity, and separated into three thematic elements of being a child. Childhood begins with Trust. It’s a natural gift given by God. And trust, in its most developed state, leads to complete dependency. Trust isn’t something we say to God. Trust is a way of being; it’s the primary way of a child…..and it must become the primary way of the children of God.

Using the words of Eugene Petersen in his book, “Praying the Psalms”, First Language is the primary language of the Psalms. (If all of the theology in the world could be summarized into one word I believe that word would be ‘Daddy’…… accompanied by the belief that He hears us.) First Language is not so much about the development of speech but the passion of it. In this section you hear a baby cry before the singing begins. I was reminded at that moment that baby Emma had been trying to say my name all that week. All she could get out of her mouth was the sound you hear me singing. Somehow I just knew she was trying to say my name. Then the day after this recording my wife, Rachel, told me that Emma said “Dada” for the first time. I believe this was more than a coincidence. (In many ways I feel like I am also learning to say ‘Dada’ for the first time.)

In Lullaby, I could not help thinking about how my son Samuel and I play this game. He says, “Daddy, come get me”, and then he waits for me to chase and catch him. Parents know that one of the greatest gifts to a child is the pure touch of a parent. Kids love to be touched and held…….and so do adults! I realized that night that God is indeed chasing me. I have tried my whole life to chase His Kingdom, hoping to be made righteous, only to find that nothing makes me holy (or whole) like the presence of my Father. Because of that I am trying to learn to slow down long enough for Him to catch me. God could catch me if He wanted; but He likes it when I wait for Him.

There is no explanation for the last song, Fly, except that during the “do you see what I see” portion you will hear a soaring voice over the top of the other voices (6 minutes and 11 seconds into this section). At first we thought it was an ambient microphone picking up an overtone. During mixing all of the channels were searched and we found that this ‘boys choir’ type voice was not on any of the other microphones, but was bleeding through my own microphone ( which would make it impossible for it to be an overtone because it was not present on any of the other microphones). If you listen carefully you will hear it again later in this section; it’s not quite as clear because, unfortunately, my voice is prominent on that microphone. Interestingly, a boy came up to me that night and told me that he saw an angel standing about fifteen feet behind me…….and another one behind our drummer. At the time I doubted that; but after hearing the ‘voice’ alone during the mixing process with no other instruments around it, I do not doubt it anymore. It was very humbling and convicting for me to realize that I had not believed the boy. I sometimes wrestle with why I so often disbelieve the supernatural (why would I first think it was something natural like an overtone, instead of believing it was an angel). The Bible tells us that we should not be surprised by angelic visitations; but I must admit, I was surprised!

Finally, I am putting out this CD because it is an authentic ‘spiritual experience’. Actually, I had originally planned to be recording another CD with many of my new songs. That will have to wait until later this year or next year. God obviously had other plans. We did not re-track anything on this recording; we just mixed and mastered what was there. I pray that while listening to this CD you will “remember” your first love and come into a greater revelation of the Kingdom of God.

“Love God. Love People. is a return to a simple, foundational Gospel command: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself,” says Israel. “Virtually every song touches on this profound simplicity. It all comes down to ‘Love God, love people.’ Period.”

Israel co-produced the new album with longtime collaborator Aaron Lindsey, whose credits include Shirley Caesar, Martha Munizzi, CeCe Winans and many more, and with Tommy Sims, whose writing, recording and performing credits range from Bruce Springstein and Garth Brooks to Wynnona and Kelly Clarkson. The trio of producers also co-wrote five of the songs, including the first Gospel single, “You Hold My World.” Three additional songs were penned by Israel and his wife Meleasa.

Love God. Love People. blends the musical genres of worship, rock, funk and power pop, and was recorded and engineered by Danny Duncan (India.Arie, Hillsong LIVE, Natalie Grant, CeCe Winans) at Abbey Road Studios in London.

“I was living out a dream come true recording at Abbey Road,” says Israel. “The ‘stomps’ on the famous staircase for ‘Name Of Love’ were just absolutely special and unforgettable. And I wept several times while The London Session Orchestra played ‘Others’ and ‘Hosanna.’ I later spoke to some of the string players who were crying while they played… absolute presence of God was captured!”

Other album highlights include Israel singing “Hosanna (Be Lifted Higher)” with Take 6’s Claude V. McKnight, III, Joey Kibble and Mark Kibble, who arranged the track. “Mercies” features the unmistakable voice of Kirk Franklin, while “Surprises” is augmented by the talent of Fred Hammond.

Special guest instrumentalists on the album include Akil Thompson (son of drum master Chester Thompson from Weather Report and Genesis) and Michael Gungor (who co-wrote “You Won’t Let Go” with Israel) on guitars. On drums are Dan Needham (Amy Grant, Vanessa Williams, Michael McDonald) and Teddy Campbell (Seal, Celine Dion, Smokie Norful). Co-producers Tommy Sims and Aaron Lindsey handle the bass and keyboards respectively. Backing vocals on select tracks are handled by Daniel Johnson, Erica King and Charlin Moore, all members of New Breed, a music ministry organization founded and led by Israel.

Writing or co-writing all but one of the songs on Love God. Love People., Israel creates music that breaks down barriers and defies categorization. Israel uses his own multi-cultural upbringing as a reference point with a desire to draw people of all races, ages and cultures together. Israel laughingly describes himself as “black kid who grew up in a white family in a Hispanic neighborhood.”

Active as worship leader in his local church, Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church, Houston, Israel has served as worship leader at Hillsong conferences, Franklin Graham crusades, and is a featured CompassionArt songwriter and artist. Israel also ministers through concerts in the U.S. and around the world, has accompanied Alicia Keys at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards for a performance of George Michael’s “Freedom ’90,” and has performed at the 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards, taking part in a segment saluting Gospel music alongside the likes of Aretha Franklin and BeBe Winans.

Every once in a while something different happens, something that makes you pause, reflect and reassess. Chris McClarney is that ‘different thing’. Unassuming, yet possessing a voice that could stop traffic, Chris McClarney is an underground phenomenon whose name has the currency of gold. From iTunes charts to church movements, many, many people are talking about Chris McClarney these days, and Chris McClarney is not one of them.

That underground swell has been going on for a while, but over recent months things have gone just a little more crazy than usual. Having given birth to the song ‘Your Love Never Fails’, Chris has found himself as songsmith-of-choice for one of the most dynamic mass mobilisations of the day; the Redding, California-based Jesus Culture youth movement. Having adopted it as the title track of their 2008 album the army of believers singing of God’s constancy in the midst of trials goes larger every day. Search for the song on YouTube and you’ll find page after page of videos that show just how far the song has reached.

So what’s the backstory? Well, first, there is the voice. Anyone who’s heard Chris McClarney sing will know what we’re talking about. Rich in tone like an ocean of prairie wheat, potent like the southern summer sun. More soul than a Mustang, more drive than a Superbowl charge. Chris McClarney has been blessed with a voice that is so full of life, so full of power and passion that it seems to come from within the listener themselves. Chris has been using that voice to great effect for years, leading worship, writing songs and generally offering up a cry that churches are longing to hear. And with his first Kingsway release just around the corner, the time comes to do a little background research and introduce the two of you.

Writing a bio about someone you’ve yet to speak to is foolish. Surely you wait at least until you’ve got some facts under your belt before you start trying to define a man? Perhaps. But there’s something about the journey that’s worth the telling. Most of the time you can pretty much find out all you need to know about an artist after a little bit of applied Googling. There are plenty of websites out there helping get the message out about this songwriter or that worship leader. But not Chris McClarney. Visit his Myspace and you find out that he’s pretty nifty with a camera, but a little on the hesitant side when it comes to promoting his music. Look him up on Facebook and it’s clear that he spends more time posting links to other artists than getting down to business and talking about his own releases. Either that or he’s commenting on how surprised he is that people are buying his music in the first place. Head over to chrismcclarney.com and there’s a static page that heralds the August release of ‘Love Never Fails’. August 2008, that is.

So Chris is something unusual in this world of multi-media messaging and coordinated campaigns. Is it shyness? Is he too busy? Does he just not do that whole internet thing?

There you’ll uncover something intriguing: a selection of worship tracks that are as raw and unpolished and soaked in the presence of God as they come. Play through them all with their improvised digressions and their epic crescendos and you’ll get an impression of the kind of man Chris is. You’ll understand that he’s a worshipper through and through, one dedicated to drawing the eyes, heart and songs of the church up towards our heavenly Father.

People like telling stories about Chris. This is one of my favourites:
Alone in his study one day, Chris was praying. From his knees he told God how desperate he was to be able to share the songs of heaven. Then a rare thing happened. In the summer of 1999, the youth group led by Banning Liebscher at Bethel Church in Redding, California, launched the first Jesus Culture conference. The heart of these gatherings was to serve other churches and lead young people to experience the radical love of God. At each conference there was a strong presence of the Lord, and the youth and young adults were going back to their homes, schools, work places and churches, completely impassioned and transformed.

A few years into hosting conferences at Redding, the Lord began to speak to us about a new breed of revivalists that were emerging throughout the earth to answer the cry of God’s yearning for nations. Our mandate was defined: to raise up, mobilize, equip, encourage, resource, and send these burning ones to fulfill the call of God on their lives, and see entire cities saved, campuses revolutionized, and nations discipled. The Lord revealed they would be marked by four main characteristics:
1) They would be connected with spiritual fathers and mothers and aligned under their covering.
2) They would be passionately in love with Jesus – encountering His extravagant love for them daily.
3) They would give their lives to prayer and know how to win the war in the heavens.
4) They would walk in the supernatural – demonstrating the Kingdom of God through power.

It soon became very clear to us that worship was to be a significant part of our movement. Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala, and Melissa How were worship leaders at our local youth group, and the Lord began to use them to bring an entire generation into whole-hearted worship.

Shortly after God commissioned us to mobilize this new breed of revivalists, we began taking Jesus Culture conferences to different regions, and currently hold them in Redding, Orange County, Dallas/Ft Worth, Chicago, Atlanta, and multiple cities through Australia and England. Also, in response to our mandate, Jesus Culture Music and Campus Awakening have been inspired and birthed out of Jesus Culture.

Jesus Culture Music exists to ignite revival in the nations of the earth. Our heart is to compel the Body of Christ to radically abandon itself to a lifestyle of worship, motivated by a passion to see God receive the glory that is due His name. We long for Jesus to be exalted in the nations and for His manifest presence to invade this world. Although we aspire for people to sing great worship songs, we are primarily committed to see them come into His presence through worship… to encounter His extravagant love and raw power.

Growing up in California, 26-year-old singer-songwriter Kevin Toqe didn't have to look far to find reflections of God in the surrounding landscape. The San Francisco Bay Area was were he developed musically with the help of some talented mentors and hours of practice. Now, through the writing and performing landscape, Kevin has developed a medium for communicating God's love through song and verse. "God gave the earthly relationship between a man and a woman to reflect what it means to feel at home in a relationship with Jesus. The feeling of home in both relationships is not confined to a location, and the best aspects in the earthly version only begin to tell of the Divine one." Listeners of Kevin's first album, Love Is, will find a noticeable progression into his second, both lyrically and musically.
